Posted - 21 April 2008 : 19:51:13 Hi,
It looks like I may have to declare bankruptcy, much as I wanted to avoid it, as I can't afford a reasonable IVA repayment right now.
I have a joint current account with my wife (who has no debts) with HSBC, and there is no debt with the bank. Are they likely to allow us to keep it if I declare bankruptcy but have no debt to them?
Thanks,
Adrian |

Posted - 05 May 2008 : 10:17:11 Hi Dee,
The only accounts that can be kept open are the Coops cashminder account Barclays cashcard account and depending how they are on the day NatWest's Step account. These are the basic accounts where you have a card for cash machine use and D/D's can be setup in them. The other account available is from Think banking where you incur a charge but you do get a maestro card. The other option is the prepaid credit cards as you can pay your bills with it and have your earnings paid straight onto that aswell. |

Posted - 05 May 2008 : 09:20:11 Dee, I don't think you can have a cheque book when you're br. It depends on the bank as it's their decision to either allow or close the bank account. We are with the co-op and the account wasn't affected at all when we filed, we continued using it as normal. To be on the safe side I would withdraw any money in the account incase it's frozen. You might also want to cancel any D/D's incase you're charged for them being refused. xx |

Posted - 04 May 2008 : 22:08:23 Hi
Going BR next week.I opened a new account with A&L at the beginning of the year when we were looking at an IVA. I've got a chq book and visa debit card but no overdraft. Do you think there is any possibilty at all of us being allowed to keep the account. I have only just got everything transfered across from my previous account.
From reading the posts on here it doesn't sound likely but I was just wondering if anybody knew of any occassion when an account wasn't closed down.
Thanks Dee |

Posted - 28 April 2008 : 16:19:34 Have you guys seen the quidity card - pay £10 for the card and the first annual fee - but then no monthly fee. Not sure how it compares to others to use it day in day out. Have a google! |

Posted - 28 April 2008 : 14:34:44 I would disagree that the fees for Think Banking are the same as a pre paid card - I pay £4.99 a month for my pre-paid Tuxedo card (Maestro) and I know the Cashplus Mastercard is the same. If you can get a Cashminder account and a prepaid card it will work out cheaper.

Posted - 28 April 2008 : 12:35:36 Think banking fees are around the same as some pre-paid credit cards, £12.50 a month. there is a start up fee of £25, these figures are increased by £5 if you opt for a second card. As Skippy has said try the Coop Cashminder account 1st . If you have no success like a few on the forum then you are guarenteed an account with think banking. Hope this helps |

Posted - 25 April 2008 : 22:48:23 One other option is a prepaid Mastercard. You can get your wages paid into the Titanium prepaid Mastercard from Moneyshop. |

just a word of warning.I too was accepted over the phone for a cashminder until i recieved a letter a week later turning me down!. I am in full time employment and they knew this ...really only wanted somewhere for my wages to paid into direct.I was accepted by Think Banking,I know not everyones choice but at least i can get paid.!! They do charge but at least it gets me back on the credit good books, plus you can use lloyds for any over the counter stuff.Don't mean to put a wet blanket over things but i was so relieved to hear prior to Bankruptcy co-op accept bankrupts that it was a major let down when i was declined.I have never owed them money or had an account previous to Bankruptcy.
Good luck :) xx |

Posted - 24 April 2008 : 16:19:35 I have just this minute rung the Co-op and been accepted for a cashminder account. Don't even want to see proof of id/address. Did it all over the phone. Lovely chap - I would give you his name but he might get inundated! Skippy you're right - I too am converted to the co-op cashminder! x |

Posted - 24 April 2008 : 14:27:02 I would definitely recommend the Co-op Cashminder account. As far as I'm concerned Think Banking are a last resort due to the (as far as I'm concerned!) extortionate fees.
If you apply to the Co-op, make sure you do it either in a branch or on the phone. You cannot apply for a Cashminder account online and a few people have made that mistake and applied for a full current account.
