I am seriously looking at br as i have recently been made redundant as a mortgage consultant, my financial affairs now prevent me from passing the fsa guidelines, therefore I am looking to move from 40k to 15k a year in maybe an accounts dept....I was thinking about training to become an accoountant....I am aware that i cannot practice as an accountant whilst bankrupt....however, is that a lifetime ban or once I am discharged could I then become an accountant.....thanks

Hi John,
This chap was actually self employed, but did use a third party for the packaging. I would suggest that you try the same argument with the FSA, as they seemed to accept the argument this chap put forward without too much of a fight!

Thanks for the answers guys, The mortgage consultant answer is very interesting, did this guy work for himself or a company, I believe most companies would have their own rules...Did he have to fight tooth and nail to carry on or was it quite an easy/straightforward process...thanks in advance |

Hi John,
i recently had a case where a mortgage broker went BR. He had to prove he was "fit and proper" to conduct regulated business. He successfully argued with the FSA that without his unsecured debts, he was actually more fit and proper and still contuinues to trade to this day. Don't give up so easily!!!

Hi John - any restrictions are not lifetime just for the period of your discharge (or BRU/BRO if you have one)
You would need to check the terms and conditions of any new job - just incase, as a company, they have restrictions against employing discharged BR's.
(Although, having been through BR, you probably have a much more realistic view of the world of finance than most!!!)
