Hi
I have just read the post about losing car worth 1,000 after being made bankrupt. Can I just ask how common that is because I thought they were not interested if car was worth less than 2,500.

Thanks

hello DM.
we are putting our ducks in a row, we were planning to go BR on 15th aug coz it is the half way point between getting paid, but have been advised that it is better to do it just after payday, so we are now looking at first week in sept. have followed your journey through the IVA portal as that was the route we were on, OH got accepted and me declined, however , OH lost his job and new employment made IVA completely impossible, and incidentally despite immediately setting up a DMP, 2 of my creditors wont leave me alone (the 2 smallest ones, less than 1K each)OH and I have come to terms with BR now and feel that the fickle hand of fate was pushing us this way and everything happens for a reason. really nervous about OR interview, and OH nervous about what to tell people, OH family have not been told of intentions as they could not understand why we were struggling when he lost job, let alone now. they are lovely people but seem to think that have rights to question every in and out of our financial situation and give them suitable explanations when it is personal to us and i would like some degree of privacy, my family have been great and are just doing everything they can to help with no questions asked. sounds cowardly but if we are questioned by anyone outside of immediate family we are telling them that OH lost job and leave out the other details! looking forward to a fresh start though and i know that we will be better off than we have been for 10 years. 'i tell my OH that we are just at the beginning of a very long future queue of people who are going to find themselves stretched financially' good luck and keep in touch about your experience on the 20th.

Hopefully as soon as I can find somewhere to live in Glasgow which should be in the next couple of weeks but I am going to prepare a good fight to keep it.It is in poor condition with the bodywork and inside but I am going to need it for work probably and also to travel home and I will be in a strange city so dont particularyl want to be travelling late at night on public transport.I wish I had found this website a long time ago ,so fantastic to read what other people are going through.

Thanks

We are borderline too (pretty much same amount), and our car is decorated with sweeties and stickers!
I will put up a good fight (200 mile round trip to work when public transport not running) and two wee babies etc etc. We are going BR August 20th, when are you?

My car is worth £2500 (not good condition) to £3000 in good condition (parkers guide) our car is not in good condition (scratches, dents, interior decorated by various kids sweets, drinks and accidents lol) but we know it is toppling over the borderline of keeping it. we are putting in a good case, it is the only car in the family (both going BR) i need it for kids school (4 miles away, my work, and OH work when he is on nights and im not using it, we have had it from new (so we know the history) 2nd child SEN so need that size of vehicle and would be hard pressed to find cheaper. However, we are prepared to lose it if we have to, although i believe that we can ask family member to buy out the BI 'so to speak'. fingers crossed hey! :)

Hi Nicola,

As long as you can demonstrate a clear NEED for a car, you can keep one worth up to £2500. However, if you do not demonstrate to the OR that you need a car, it's likely they'll try and take it, irrespective of value.
