Heres a difficult one for you? Me and hubby are petitioning on the 4th Sept for BR. We are being completely honest about everything (even the approx £500 that could be left in the current account at the time. However, My son enters his GCSE year in September for two years + sixth form (hopefully) and he has arrangements to use a laptop throughout his schooling and exams,(dyspraxic and unable to produce legible writing) we have just found out that his school is unable to continue loaning him one (not enough to go round)and the only way he can have access is if we purchase one for him and keep it there for his use in school only (insurance against viruses etc) My worry is that if we purchase a cheap model now the OR will look very unkindly on this in September, but if we wait until after BR we will not be able to afford one and his education severely suffers. (no disposable income) Any ideas, suggestions? |

How ironic, i went to pc world with my son today and although we have a little spare cash now, we do not want to waste it, our creditors need to get their maximum yield. to cut a long story short we looked around for a suitable laptop that would basically allow him to meet his basic exam arrangments of using PC to record his work. well as it turns out they had a real nifty little notebook type thing that costs just £179 and will fit neatly into his schoolbag, (as i said earlier, he is dyspraxic, so trying to carry around another huge bag is not only impractical but dangerous for others. lol) We are taking the details into school tomorrow to see if this model will network onto their system and then its all systems go! I am so proud of my son, he tried to persuade me that despite his arrangements he would cope somehow but is now so exited about the prospect of this nifty little laptop with its nifty little price tag. I also spoke to someone at the school today that i trusted to ask if they could give me copies of the paperwork to say that he needs the laptop alongside a letter verifying that they can no longer provide one, and they were straight onto it. Hopefully with the information that the school are going to provide alongside the fact that we have in fact found the cheapest, and most practical for his needs laptop will impress the OR enough to allow him to keep it. thanks for all your advice  |

I would suggest an explanation would go down very well. The more the OR sees you cooperating and making their life easier, the easier they'll go on you!

I would think the OR wouldn't look too harshly on this as it's essential for your son. As Assist says, they aren't ogres and your examiner may well have children of his/her own.
Try looking in Tesco for laptops as they often have good deals.
Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.

Thank you very much indeed for your responses, i really need to get this for my son but i do not want the OR to think that i am trying to deliberately dissolve cash. Think that i going to purchase it, keep the receipt and get proof of why. Do I list it on the assets with an explanation? |

You are not worsening your position by purchasing a laptop - merely changing the status of one asset (cash) to that of another (laptop). To this end there is nothing wrong in acquiring the asset, and if the OR decides that you have been reckless they can take the laptop back - but I would deem this to be highly unlikely.

it's common for posts such as yours to attract little response for a while.
The fact is I think you've answered your own question. Will the OR frown upon such a purchase? Maybe but I doubt it if you give him the full story. Do you want your son to go without this very important item? Not if you can avoid it.
I cannot advise you to do so (why there's been little response), BUT, if it were me I would most definately buy the item, adjust the SoA to show a new true balance on the bank account and when meeting with the examiner take along some evidence to support the fact your son has dyspraxia and also something from his school confirming they could not provide an alternative.
The OR's examiner's are not the ogre's some make them out to be.
You see, it's out of the question for an expert on this forum to advise you, technically, to fly in the face of the examiner. I certainly wouldn't do so, I can only say what I would do in the same circumstance, if you get my drift.

Get the laptop now if you can buy this without using sources of credit you cannot repay. It is essential for your son's education, and you can actually get good laptops now for less than £500.
