Hi,
I'm sorry but this is going to be off topic, but it's kind of related! I'd appreciate any help you can give.
I declared myself BR in March this year. I'm currently renting a baby sized studio but would like to move into a bigger property with my bf and his two children who visit on weekends.
For obvious reasons, I am having problems already - I can't get a guarantor (my dad is retired so they won't accept him even though he has ££££ in the bank). I don't know anyone else to ask and I also can't afford the 6 months in advance.
One option we are thinking of is - the bf tells the agent he is going to live in the property on his own and does all the credit checks etc and goes on the tenancy agreement alone. What would happen if I then later moved in? Do I have to do anything (apart from tell the mean OR)? Can the landlord / agent stop me moving in when they realise my circumstances. Can they make the tenancy end early??
The problem with this is that I don't get my name on a tenancy agreement. What happens if I get made redundant (it is a very big possibility)? Can I claim housing benefit without a tenancy agreement?
Do you know if they take his income into consideration when assessing housing benefit? The bf won't be supporting me in any way at all (he can barely support himself), and when / if I get made redundant, he will not be able to afford all the rent, bills and everything else on his own :((
What about if we went to WHSmiths and brought one of those homemade legal packs so we can say I am his lodger, would that help me instead?
I'm sorry to ask questions, it's just that being made redundant will cripple him and probably send him over the edge to BR too.

That's what i'm worried about - after he pays his csa, his credit card bills, loan etc, he won't be able to pay ALL the rent on his own. I don't know what to do. I guess we will have to stay living apart. :((
BTW, I am going all i can to get a new job now rather than be made redundant x

You get housing benefit based on joint income if you live with your partner. |

I don't know how tenancy or housing benefit work but I'm sure he would need the landlord's permission to take you as a lodger.
Hopefully one of the other forum members might know.
