I'd like some help with some debt questions please. Before i ask though i just wanted to say thank you to everyone here, i received an early discharge from my BR in February 2010 and i couldn't have got through it without the advice from people on this forum. My life now is on the up and there is definetely life after BR!

Anyway my questions relate to advice for one of my mates mother who has debt problems. I did extensive research before my BR but my situation is quite different so i'd like some advice. I have told her to arrange a CAB interview ASAP.

So basically, she is retiring in September when she will be 61 years old. She will then claim state pension but she does not have any work pension to claim. She won't have any other source of income.

She has about £15k worth of unsecured debt, mainly 10+ provident loans stretching over 17 years, another small loan and bits and pieces.

She lives in a council house and does not own a car. She has no savings. My mate says she has her mind on BR but i'd like to hear other peoples views. Obviously i'm not up to speed on how age and pensions affect BR or IVA or a payment plan. She rang a company who said they would fill in the forms etc and it would only be £1200! Vultures! I'll help with the forms, no problem, as will the CAB.

Is BR her best course of action?

Maybe, but she really needs to add the debts up as if the debts are under £15,000, then it sounds like she will qualify for the Debt Relief Order, which the CAB will do for her.
