Hi. We have been in an iva now for two years. Our mortgage is with northern rock and has gone up by 130 per month. Accuma have told us that from our finances we still should be able to pay the full amount first agreed which is 427. Despite not agreeing with this they seemed adament. We have had our second child at beginning of July and this had added further to our financial situation. My husband has been accepted as a prison officer and awaiting a place and I am already a serving prison officer, therefore we are concerned about the repurcussions of bankrupcy, not sure if this would affect this. We are starting to feel though that bankruptcy is our only option if we cannot get accuma to reduce our payments. Please can you advise?

That sounds encouraging for you then Sonia. :-) If I were you I'd still want to check with HR for my own peace of mind and to check where your husband will stand as he has not yet taken up a post.

Hope you get the news you want. Do let us know how you get on. :-)

sonia - i'm not an expert but i am also a prison officer, recently bankrupt and have not yet had a problem at work. i informed the governor and he reminded me of professional standards etc. i then told him to mind his own business (well, guess i put it a bit stronger than that!) and reminded him that all professional standards requires is that our finances are conducted in a 'proper and responsible' way and since bankruptcy is both legal and moral then i had acted in that proper and responsible manner they demand.

Hi,

After a quick search at http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/careersandjobs/eligibility/ it does say unfortunately that to be eligible to work for the prison service, 'You must not be an undischarged bankrupt'. I'm not 100% certain how it would work for those people already working as a prison officer though.

As I said, that's just what I've found online. As Suzanne said, it's best to check with HR (I got my hubby to phone anonymously for me). I hope they can give you good news.

Hi, and welcome to the forum

I am not aware of any problems with being a serving prison officer and bankruptcy, but the only way to know for sure would be to contact your HR dept and ask the question.

Could you post to let us know the outsome and this sort of information is very useful for others.
