Planning on going BR in Jan. Income is almost non existent in our household and my wife has just gone back to full time work.
I've avoided all the hassling phonecalls and review the numerous letters that get sent to me to which I have been able to review and deal with like a robot.
I mistakenly answered a phone call thinking it was a friend calling me back only to be speaking to one of the companies I have a PG with for a failed business venture. They said they would put a charging order on my property before I could go BR.
Can they work that quickly or is it all just talk?

potentially they could but not in time.
If they were to start proceedings today they would have to get a CCJ first. Then they would apply an interim charging order. Then 2 or 3 weeks later they would apply for a final charging order hearing to be set, you would be notified of the date.
Basically you need to be bankrupt before the date of that final charging order hearing to stop the order landing. This would take 3 months if they have not started the CCJ process yet so a planned bankruptcy in January would stop it all happening anyway.
