Posted - 09 February 2009 : 02:54:38 Hello, I am a new member to this forum.
I have around 20,000 pounds worth of debt in the UK. I have no assets, savings or investments in the UK. I got into debt around 2006 as I went back to University and found it very hard to fund myself. I took out a personal loan and some extra credit cards. These ended up out of control so late 2007 I started the process of an IVA I was told I didn’t qualify as I didn’t have any spare income. After a relationship breakdown which involved me being thrown out of my rented property and going to the opposite end of the country to live with family. My father suggested I move with him(he lives abroad) to try and start again(this relationship breakdown cause anxiety and depression) I have now made a new life for myself in my new country and have decided I want to stay here. My debts are always on my mind and I haven’t had a proper nights sleep in 3 years, I am worried sick. I called the debt recovery companies and I arranged to pay monthly, sounded great but I have 6/7 creditors and each time I did this I had to pay bank charges and this was about the same cost as the repayment!! Due to the low exchange rate I was paying an absolute fortune! So I got in contact with a company who deals with BR from abroad who were very helpful but expensive. I cannot get anyone to be power of attorney as I have few family members of friends. I have no assets in my new country, other than a cheap car (about 800.00 pounds) Can anyone advise me? I haven’t been able to speak to anyone, no one knows about this. Can anyone suggest a good company to use? Would I need to pay back extra money? I have around 50 quid left after rent etc.
Someone please help me.

Posted - 10 February 2009 : 14:11:50 There are companies that will do it, but they will charge a fee for doing it, which will be on top of the normal court fees.
I believe it has to be the High Court and the charges for that are £507 at the moment.

Posted - 10 February 2009 : 12:56:39 Gu-day,
I think (but am open to correction by one more learn-ed) that there are specialist companies who can carry this out on your behalf via power of attorney.
I'm sure I've seen previous links for similar circumstances to your.
Hopefully a forum expert could advise - or maybe a long distance call to the advise line?
Good luck

Posted - 10 February 2009 : 12:50:31 I am really not sure if there is anything you can do then.
You can hire a solicitor, or pay a company to do it, but that will cost a lot of money, which you obviously don't have.
You could check out the insolvency site:
http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/
There may be something on there.

Posted - 09 February 2009 : 12:12:10 I think you have to have an address in this country before you can do that.
The best thing would be to appoint a Power of Attorney if he/she could ask a family member.
