There is no way I would pay to run a bank account
Hi Jane.l, can i ask you what account you have, is it the very basic cash card account, or the basic Barclays bank account? I told them at Barclays i was about to go BR, and they opened a Barclays bank a/c + a savings a/c for me, but i am still uncertain to whether or not these will be closed, even though they said it shouldn't. Did you open yours before or after declaring BR? |

Posted - 23 July 2009 : 00:11:35 I think I will only repeat what i said in some of my other blog posts around prepaid cards and basic bank accounts:
The prepaid cards that charge £12.50 or so a month come with a basic bank account so not really fair to compare with just prepaid cards. Cashplus can be around £4.95 or nothing based on the type of card chosen but then there are other cards which are free.
I think cashplus is good if you are looking for a card and also looking to build credit history using their creditbuilder facility but any of the previously mentioned products like onebanking, thinkbanking etc also give you a basic bank account facility so need to make sure we are comparing apples with apples.
So choose wisely based on what your needs are going forwards. You can review a number of prepaid card products as well as basic banking products here - http://www.prepaid365.com/compare-unbanked-prepaid-cards.html

Posted - 22 July 2009 : 16:30:30 I went down the 2 Cashminder route and it's made life a lot easier, and now the Co-op have let me open a savings account so at least I can transfer money quickly.
I agree there is a place for managed accounts, but my point is I would only ever recommend them as a last resort.

Posted - 22 July 2009 : 14:49:22 Co-op have kept my cashminder account open, even though i owed them £2500, which was included in my BR!!....strange, but true. I`m just about to apply for a new card, as i sent mine to the O.R.
I`m using Think Banking at the moment, (i will go back to the cashminder soon), and although it`s £12.50 p.m..it`s a managed account, all your available funds go into a `card account`, and are the only funds available to spend. Some say that 2 cashminder accounts would be a free solution though!.
All i`m saying is, that if you can`t get a cashminder account, the Think Banking account is a good one. |

Posted - 22 July 2009 : 12:41:00 I agree Jane.
I'm lucky, I've got a Co-op Cashminder (and to be honest I would stick with them even if they start charging) but would only suggest people pay for an account as a last resort, and if they have to pay, make sure it does what you want it to do - direct debits, online banking etc - as not all of them do.

Posted - 22 July 2009 : 12:19:26 You do get some benefits from an Advantage Gold account though! £12.50 is a lot of money for an account that doesn't even offer direct debits.

Posted - 22 July 2009 : 11:58:54 Hi Rival, I hope you have found help already but i think there are a number of prepaid card products with basic bank accounts that you could consider
- OneBanking prepaid card - Extra Direct Prepaid Card - Think Banking prepaid card - Red88 Prepaid Card
For me the onebanking product is the best established (there is a review here http://www.prepaid365.com/onebanking-prepaid-card.html) so worth giving a shout but all these will give you a prepaid card (which you can use as a debit card) and a basic bank account - no questions asked.
Typical costs are £12.50 a month but that is what I used to pay Natwest for my advantage gold account anyway so i think it is a good one to help at this point.
Hope this helps

Posted - 08 April 2009 : 21:45:14 Looks as though a lot of them can be used like a normal bank account.
I will always use a bank account as long as it is free, but they are good if you can't get one.
The one good thing is that you can't go accidentally overdrawn and incur charges.

Posted - 08 April 2009 : 20:24:47 You can also use the Tuxedo card for your salary and direct debits, although I believe there are charges.
The Clearcash card is also going to be relaunched shortly.

Posted - 08 April 2009 : 19:33:39 But can you have your salary paid in and pay direct debits from it?

Posted - 08 April 2009 : 19:31:29 If you want a prepaid card i believe there is only one that offers the purchase protection offered by normal credit cards, its cashplus gold, i have one and its great. The only downside is the set up fee (£30 if i remember correctly) Its handy for buying things you have saved for or hiring a car!!
