Slightly off the topic. I have a friend who has cleared her mortgage. Only one dependant. Her and her DH both earn over 30k. No credit at all. They applied for a 2k loan as son needs major dental work.........They were declined because of no credit history!

Yep, in this strange 'credit history' world you need to be in debt, and make the credit payments, in order to have a good credit rating. A similar thing happened to me after living abroad for 5 years. I came back to the UK and was unable to get credit for anything even though I had a good job as I didn't have a credit history.
Bill88 - Congratulations on completing the BR. I'm just starting my journey but am looking forward to a new financial life |

Posted - 09 April 2009 : 10:18:57 The only thing I will have credit for in the future is a car, and possibly if we ever move a mortgage. I've still got my contract phone as I wouldn't trust myself to remember to top up a PAYG!

Posted - 09 April 2009 : 09:51:56 I have done 18 months now with no credit and I have no intention of getting any ever again, I run an old banger car, its lasted me since bankruptcy and is very reliable, it only cost me £400 and when that breaks, I will buy another old banger. I have given up hope of getting credit for a car so unless I can save thousands, the days of nice cars have long gone for me! I still have my private number plate but there is no point putting it on a car which is worth less than the plate, I have just applied to have it valued but not sure if I can bear to sell it.
I have a PAYG phone, thats fine for me too, so no contract there. I will never again apply for a loan, if we want a holiday, we will save up the cash first, so I think a person can live without credit. |

Posted - 09 April 2009 : 09:37:02 Congratulations, onwards and upwards...for future reference - a life without some debt may not be possible, as we all incur debt for large purchases such as a car, but the secret is to keep on top of the debt and only incur debt you can afford to repay, and never take out credit to repay other credit ie cards to pay other cards or transfer balances you only end up with balances on both cards - and steer clear from consolidation loans, they definately do not work! Well done though in seeing this through to the end- and thank you for the positive post - it will hopefully give support to other thinking about or beginning the process of bankruptcy, and please pop back on the forum every now and your experience having gone through the process will be valuable to others!
Have a good Easter, and not too many chocolates!
