Hi:

I too was discharged earlier this year and wanted to improve my Credit Rating. I had a Nationwide account but wanted to get an account with a proper Debit Card. I went to the Nat West and opened a Step Account. I openly daclared my Bankruptcy to them (I had even owed them £30k previously) The account was opened after I proved my income etc.

I also tried for a Capital One Card but got a no. I then applied for a Vanquis Card (Visa) Again was totally honest and now have a credit card with a £250 limit which I pay off every month. This is laying the foundations for an improved Credit Rating. but BEWARE: Vanquis charge 42% APR on borrowing so you MUST pay off any spending each month!

Be under no illusions, We will have this on our experian and equifax records for 6 years from the START of our BR. This will mean that borrowing will be difficult but not impossible. Having said all this going BR was the best thing I have ever done, (apart from divorcing my alcoholic first wife)

With the amount of people going insolvent the banks are going to have to lend to the likes of us to remain in business. The more that go BR , the easier things will become.

I hope this helps you and others on this site

You credit file will still show that you were declared BR. Have you checked your credit file to see if your creditors have updated it to show that you are no longer BR? You can normally obtain a free copy of your credit file.

Have a look at Skippy's blog as she has been going through this process - http://skippy13.blogs.bankruptcyhelp.org.uk/

You could also try getting a pre-paid credit card as I think these will improve your credit rating as well.
