I received around £10k as an insurance payout after a theft from my home. Basically all that money has just about gone, replacing stolen items, a holiday for my wife and i to see if we would stay together (didn't work!) flat deposits for both of us, living expenses, furniture etc.

The problem is i received the money in 2 seperate cheques, 1 which was around £8.2k and the other £1.8k. For fairness reasons and because i thought we'd both have to go BR i asked for the large cheque to be made out to a relative and paid into their account. Some of this has been used up by card transactions etc, but a large amount was taken out in cash and has just been kept getting used.

The smaller cheque, which came later, got paid into our joint account and so i can show where that went.

I've looked at the SOA and i can't see any question about disclosing money you have received?

Should i keep quiet about the large cheque as it has never been in an account held by me or my wife and then i can explain about the smaller cheque that was in my account?

I am worried if i declare the large cheque it will look like i have hidden money, when in fact it has all gone!

I'd appreciate some expert advice on this please.

Thanks John, that is a load off my mind.

Hi

as you have said, there is no question within the SoA which would require this information to be disclosed. So don't.

Even if the fact did find it's way out of the woodwork later, I can't see how, you can account for where it all went anyway.
