Expert Help Please!! I have my BR arranged for August. I own a property which is in negative equity. The CAB said rent a property prior to going BR as it will be very difficult to rent once declared BR. Can someone tell me if I still have to pay the council tax on the property I own even if I am not living there?

Many thanks

hi
I moved out of my property in april o6 (aprox)and into rented property (council). the mortgaged property was not repossessed until nov 07 (aprox), I live off benefits so the council property was paid for by CT benefit, I paid no CT on the mortgaged property from the day i moved out, so i think as long as there is proof that it is unoccupied u dont hav 2 pay CT. If you call the CT office im sure they will sort things for u.

hope this helps.

I am no expert (at all) but we are in the same situation and i believe you have to keep paying your council tax until you are out fully as council tax will not be included in BR, you will always still owe it, if you dont pay, you'll just get behind, we move out 9/10th roughly but our c/tax is due on 18th and i will still be paying it, as then when the account is closed (write to them), if we are due a refund due to over payment it will be sent back via a cheque. We are moving council districts so i know we cant just port/move over our c/tax, you maybe able to if staying with same council?

Im sure an expert will help soon...

I have the same query and have written informing the council of my new address as of June 8th. I just assumed that council tax would just be transfered. I am going to ask for voluntary repo and send keys back.
I would have thought that in any event neither you nor I actually "own" the property as the Mortgage company own it
