Posted - 05 June 2009 : 21:13:07 Hi, this is probably a really obvious question but we used to run a pub and we have been trying to maintain a debt management for the last 12months and it has become apparent that this isn’t the way forward and due to the amount of debt the pub left us in we are going to declare ourselves bankrupt at the beginning of July. One of the reasons for this is my husband current temp job ends at the end of this month and it is proving impossible to find any further work. One of the things that he has always wanted to make a career out of doing is gardening but in order to do this he would need a small van to get to jobs. He has suggested buying a cheap one (£500/£600) using some of his last pay from his current job which would enable him to do this. He has already been offered some work so it would seem an ideal opportunity for him to earn money but I am unsure as to how buying a van so close to declaring ourselves bankrupt would look. My feeling is that we shouldn’t be doing as it may be looked upon badly buy the OR but on the other had he does need to try and find some work somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas on this??? Thank you!

The OR realises that people need to work and that career changes can involve an initial outlay. If your debt is anything like mine was when I declared BR then £500/£600 wouldn't make any impact.
The OR would question the outlay but when you mention that this has allowed your husband to secure an income it won't be a problem.
