Hi all,
I am currently 4 months into my bankruptcy and I wondered if anyone could give their experiences or advice on renting once bankrupt. I am currently renting from a private landlord, whom I have informed of my bankrupcty and he has no problem with it whatsoever. However, I would really love to move as the area I live in is far from pleasant and I'd love to move to a flat or house in a nicer area. The problem is most properties in the town are only available through letting agents and I know its difficult to go through these as they do credit checks. Does anyone have experience of this and if so, would there be any chance of being able to get a property through letting agents while you are bankrupt if you explain your position to them? If not, I cannot see myself ever being able to move ever again.
Its crazy that you could have an excellent credit rating but be up to your neck in debt, but they allow you a property. But if you are bankrupt, but have no debts as such and more likely to be able to pay rent easily, they don't want to know. I know bankruptcy has penalties, but everyone deserves the right to have somewhere decent to live surely?

You may find you have to put up six months rent in advance as well.
The best thing to do would be to approach landlords in the area you wish to move to and see how they feel. If you can get a reference from your current landlord then that should help.

Hi,
I don't have any experience with this but will bump the post up to the top of the list.
I think some people have been able to get rentals through agencies by putting down a 6 month deposit, which isn't possible for a lot of people as they are BR after all so don't have any money.
The other option would be to make anonymous contact with the agencies and advise that you are interested in a property but are BR and would this cause a problem. It might also be worth clarifying whether this would only be a problem until you are discharged. You could send an email from a Yahoo/Hotmail type account and just say that you are looking to move into the area from elsewhere in the UK so they wouldn't be able to track you down. |
