I've now been bankrupt for one week, can anyone tell me how long bank accounts stay open for? I've opened a new account before BR,and told the OR about it on the first phone call. He said he would tell Barclays he had no interest in it, but i dont know if i should see someone in my branch, as, even though i told them i was going bankrupt before opening it, i've noticed on their website that you cant have this account if bankrupt. Also my account with Lloyds TSB is now over the overdraft limit due to bank charges being added, so would like to know when this is likely to be closed.
Appart from Lloyds TSB, i've told all my creditors who phone, that i'm bankrupt, and gave the receivers address - cant believe how quiet the phone is now!!!

Hi overspent,
Have been to Barclays this afternoon to see about my account, as i too could no longer get on to online banking, the night before i got paid, so was worried my account was frozen. Anyway the account is still open, but was told i shouldnt have been given that account,as i told them i was due to go bankrupt, so the woman in that branch is making a complaint against this other person who opened the account for me. so now they've opened a cashcard account and will be transfering everything over to that( means i got to change details AGAIN with my employer!!!) Also she said i could have internet banking with this account, even though bankrupt, so i will let you know once the other account has been closed. By the way i dont use pin sentry to log in.

Yes it is because of that...our branch have tried everything. even been sent a new log in but still doesn't work. Reason for new log in was in theory the onling banking was downgraded ie no longer use pin sentry and log in manually which meant couldn't pay a third party online...........you may have better luck but i doubt it..hence we requested dauly statements..which will be a pain for Barclays but as our guy said at our branch...maybe this will get them to reconsider if everyone in our situation requested it. If you can get to a branch tomorrow i would...I wouldn't leave it.

Hi Overspent,
Have just looked on the barclays website, how come you cant have online banking? It says you can have online banking with that account, subject to registration. Is it because you're bankrupt? perhaps you should see them again, and take a print out of that account info.

We initially went to a smaller branch who didn't have a clue what to do prior to account getting frozem, hence we left account as was and then found that i couldnt get onto online banking a few days later. the next day we went to a main branch and they were fantastic and apologetic as the letter that had been sent out to us to inform us that the account was being frozen hadn;t reached us..........But we got our new account sorted there and then and got new cards a few days later. I've got used to no online banking..it is a pain but I asked for daily statements instead... there is no real reason why we shouldn't beable to do online banking...if anything it enables us to keep total control of our finances. Still, we didn't always have online banking so it's back to basics for a while....it will costs barclays to send the statements but it's their rules.

Thanks, i'll have to see someone about changing over, before they decide to freeze it then. I dont know why i was told i could have that account, their cash card account never came up on her computer. Will miss the online banking though!

Hi Nic.....this account Will get frozen. Ours did with barclays, but there was no problem changing over to their cash card account..you get a full visa debit card...............BUT no online banking facility we have since found out. our branch think it is ridiculous so are now going to send out daily statements instead. We have also been allowed to open new savings accounts...and have moved our home and contents insurance to theirs since bankruptcy.

hope this helps

xx
