Hey

I'm having to move as landlord is selling our home, and trying to find somwhere else. We have a dog and 4 cats. Finally found somewhere that would take them, but then had to fill in the agencies forms with the inevitable 'adverse credit history' question. I put poor credit history but can provide guarantor who is home-owner', but there are loads of other applicants.

I started to wonder then, have I dont the right thing? Will I ever find anywhere to live, or will we all be homeless?

Utterly fed up, and wondering if I would have been better just being suicidal and terrified of post/phone :(

Have been in touch with them, and they're sending me out a form for housing, plus the agency list, and they say that's all they can do, given that we're both working and have no kids.

The estate agent says we'd have a much better chance with just two cats instead of 4, so 2 may have to go live with my mum :(

hello again Sparkle 83,

If you are suffering from health problems (such as stress and depression), it may still be worth going to the homeless persons section to see - as I said, (and as you will know if you have worked in a housing department), there is a statutory DUTY for the local authority tomprovide advice and assistance. Make an enquiry (I assume there may be some reluctance as you may know people there (id that was the same locacl authority?)

If that is putting you off - do NOT let it - I have been to the CAB where I knew people - what has happened in your life has happened - you are not a criminal - you had financial problems not committed murder!! Go and make those enquiries and be strong - it may amount to nothing without the children in terms of priority, but health of a mental health nature may assist you with the backing of your GP (whom, I assume you have seen of late due to stress and depression?)

Come back withj more posts if you feel I can or anyone else on the forum can assist you, Richard

Thanks everyone, your support means a great deal.

Re: council housing.I used to work as a receptionist for my local housing section, and we wouldn't have any priority at all (we're both ok, both work, have no dependant kids (due to fertility issues, otherwise I might have had tons by now and had my own council house ;) ) so all they would do is give us a list of estate agencies and tell us to go and look.

I definately can't afford 6 months rent in advance, it'll be enough of a struggle getting one month in advance + one for deposit + extra deposit for pets + agency fees :O

Hello sparkle

I too am so sorry that you are having trouble finding a property to rent.

I was an estate agent and a letting agent in my life before BR so I know about the inbuilt prejudices!! We used to house BR people though with a guarantor.

I had a background in the social sector before I had my own business as a director of a local authority housing department so I do understand your position.

I suggest (if you have not already done so) that you approach your homeless persons section at your council, they may have a DUTY to house you. There is certainly a DUTY to offer you advice and assistance. If you have a disability, special need or children of school age, you will have a greater "need" in the councils statutory eyes.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish you well and do not let the system beat you - you have done what you have done and can only move forward now. I hope that you get some assistance. If not, post again and I will happily offer you my professional advice as to the legal routes you may have open to you

regards, Richard

That is a problem, a lot of places ask for 6 months.

I do hope that you get something sorted.

I keep looking for private landlords, but there isn't alot about at the moment. Many estate agents dismiss us out of hand for poor credit history (I avoid the BR word where possible, and dont volunteer the info). We havent been given a set date, as our landlords are friends of ours, and need to do lots of work before they can sell anyhow, but I just need to find somewhere new to settle.

loads of places ask if you can do the full 6 months rent up front :O

Sorry you're so down Sparkle.

I'm sure you will find someone who will let the pets go as well.

As well as getting the reference saying you have paid on time, I would also get the landlord to say that your pets have not caused any damage or been a nuisance to anyone.

Try not to worry Sparkle, it looks like you will be discharged in a few weeks so things are getting better.

It's never easy finding a new rental when you have pets and especially with 5 of them!

How long do you have to find a new place? Don't forget to check the local papers for a private landlord as these aren't normally so fussy.

Also remember to get a reference from your current landlord saying that you had paid the rent on time, kept the place tidy, etc.

Declaring BR is something that comes back to bite all of us at some point no matter how carefully we have planned the whole situation but we all get through it.
