I think it is horses for courses.
Some people feel more comfortable with a little help, other folk prefer to handle the situation themselves because it helps with closure.
There is a big difference with form filling and bankruptcy assistance so please don't get these confused.
Any of the experts on the forum will be happy to go over your individual case and give you free advice. If you wanted to use them then that is a separate issue and your choice. Free advice and some pointers definately won't hurt and may give you some peace of mind.

A straight forward household debt case ie non trader can easily go through the process themselves. The actual process was devised for people to file their own petitions (I was one of the people involved with the process whilst at The Insolvency Service)although the forms may appear daunting, if you sit down in a quiet room with all your paperwork spread out on a table, it should not take over an hour to do even if you have never dealt with the forms before. And if you are stuck we here on the forum will always help
For people who have literacy problems or form phobias or absolutely terrrified by the whole process, make an appointment with your local Citizens Advice Bureau they will complete the forms for you they can also provide advice and help with regard to the various schemes available to help fund part or all of the costs too!

hi it really depends on the complexity of your case and of course how much disposable income you have available.
Some people do feel reassured to have someone there to offer expert opinions and there are some excellent bankruptcy services such as Paul johns who regularly posts here.

I definitely agree with Jan, I petitioned myself. So much help on this site, you can literally go through your forms step by step. An absolute Godsend. The only thing I would recommend is to make sure you take someone with you to court, your companion can keep you level-headed and strong. Good luck, it is not half as bad as you are probably imagining.

It is a lot cheaper to petition for yourself, as it will only cost you the £510 court fees - a company will charge you £300+ on top of that, and some of them charge a lot more.
You can fill the forms in yourself via this link:

You can save them as you go along and of course we are always here to help you if you have any problems.
