Hi all,

At present I am in receipt of ESA, council tax benefit, CHB for our youngest who is in further education, CTC and a small pension. My wife receives IB. We are getting some assistance on Mortgage Interest too - not the full amount as we have a LARGE mortgage still!!

The OR is aware of course of income. There is no IPA or IPO and whilst I am not working (which is driving me mad), there is not likely to be.

I want to seek advice as to whether we are receiving what we are entitled to - Have been to CAB and they are not that switched on (very well meaning though).

Is there a national organisation that gives advice on welfare rights that I can seek the advice I am seeking (This may be a naive question). I have never previously been on benefit and it is not a lot of fun!!

Any guidance welcome, Richard

I'm sorry to hear that you're both having problems. This sort of thing really winds me up - my dad was disabled and my mum was his carer so they both had to claim benefits. I can still remember the problems they had getting what they were entitled to, and I'm sure they didn't get everything

Good luck to both of you x

It really doesn't seem fair. No wonder so many people decide its alot easier to sit on their backsides all day!

The thing is I want to work, I can't work full time because of my medication etc. but it really doesn't seem like I have a choice.

Sad that life has got like this, people say you should think of your health first but if you can't afford to live?!

Maizie,

thanks for your posting - you have hit the nail on the head - I had a breakdown in April and went BR in May - I am receiving 20p a fortnight, yes 20p ESA and can I get an official at the DWP/Job centre to listen? No.

I have had a conversation last week when I was told that she could not sit there all day talking to me!! I was speachless.

Good luck to you, Richard

I haven't got much faith in the government and welfare rights at the moment!

I was signed off sick for a month for depression, went back to work even though doctor wanted to sign me off again because I couldn't afford to live off statutory sick pay.

Went back to work on reduced hours, couldn't claim anything. I work 15 hours a week and nobody will help me. Apparantly Im not entitled to anything. I can't claim disability, can't claim working tax, can't claim jobseekers. My partner has been made redundant so is now on jobseekers.

We are struggling to survive and it makes me so mad especially when we live opposite someone who has never worked, claims everything and anything, I need a bit of help to get me through it, never claimed a single benefit in my life and nobody can help!
