****** PAUL i need to speak to you URGENTLY - please ring me , Lyndsey*****
Got a new job which i just started yesterday after going BR in November. Im only working 20 hours a week over 5 mornings. As its an essential car users car I had to take in my car insurance etc today for them to add me on the mileage and car user allowance syastem. They knew at time of accepting job that my car insurance is in brothers name with me on as a named driver (due to cost of me insuring in my name)
As the certificate shows he has business use but not me they wont accept it as covering me. Spoke to insurance who confirm it doesnt cover me + cant be amended to include me. I would need to take my own policy out , pay cancellation fees and admin fees for current one then £1043 for a year for a car worth <1500 and they wont allow me to make monthly payments , has to be a lump sum. They said it was because of when they credit checked me so it has to be my BR. Eventhough the current policy is in brothers name i pay it from my bank account , they can see that ! so why cant i pay my own ?
Can i pay monthly with other companies ?? They all seem to be saying no to me.
Its work who want me to change my policy. I have not got money to pay the policy in full and 1000 seems very expensive , will they be charging me extra due to BR / bad rating ?
Work say i cant be there without the required insurance , spoke to job centre and there is no one who can help so would seem i need to go back onto income support which i dont want to do. Wanted to do this job for years ..... any words of advice please |

Not being able to pay monthly is pretty normal when you are BR but £1000 seems very excessive for car insurance unless you don't have any no claims discount.
I can't offer advice about other insurance firms that may allow you to pay monthly but others on the forum may. |

Do you live at the same address as your brother? |

no i dont live at the same address as my brother. I had an accident just over 4 yrs ago so my insurance went up and was too expensive for me. So put my car in his name , he is the policy holder and I the named driver. In May i will have been on his policy 3 yrs with tesco and have gained a named driver discount (only recognisable by tesco) but they dont give me discount for it until after May 16th when the 3 yrs has expired. So guess im being stung for having no no claims and for having had accident 3 yr ago and because of BR on file. |

Hi Lyndsey
Just when you started to get your self sorted out. I have posted my problems about car insurance but the company that came back tops was good old CO OP
They would not allow DD if total bill was over £500 but they did suggest I could pay % lump sum in advance and then pay instalments as long as i was in credit !
did not fully explore all payment avenues with them but they sounded helpful
No doubt Paul may have options

Hi ,
Try 'Santander' formally Abbey National .. Dont think they credit check to pay monthly . I have just come out of BR but do have a 4yr BRU and i managed to pay by instalments monthly no problems and no questions asked re BR ..altho my premium was only £230 .. Good luck

You need tobe sure that you are covered now, being at a different address as when my ex left (I was thhe named driver) I was told I was no longer covered. |

There are no issues over me being covered to drive the car "in general" they are aware of all that - the insurance company i mean. Its just this business use thing.
Well im in at 9 am today till 1pm - going to have to discuss situ with manager , options are :
Pay a full year insurance - cant poss do
Even if i did have 1k kicking around i would not be paying to insure a 1500 car with it ! not when i would only have "normal insurance". Being charged a hell of a lot extra for the business use which is not something i would have chosen to have.
There is no where i can loan the money from to pay it , not even if i did find someone who would give me installments with a deposit. Deposit will still be a fair amount and as i was only on benefit 13 week my benefit has stopped as soon as i started work so have no money in until i get paid from work.
Only other possible outcome is they suggest paying it and me repay them monthly from my wage. Which i do not see as being financially viable as i am only working 20 hours to be £240 a month gross better off than i would have been on income support. so 50% of my "better off" part of wage is then going to be consumed by the insurance.
No sense in worrying myself about it / getting stressed out. That wont resolve the situ. Worst case scenario, back home by 10am and in turn have no excuse for not doing the ironing ! ha ha
At least in May i would have been on benefit 26week and therefore entitled to the "back to work benefits" which im not entitled to now.
And i would have been the named driver on tesco for 3 yrs and they would give me 3 yr named driver discount , unfortunaley not recognised with anyone else though. And as I have to insure in my name when this current policy expires i will have to find somewhere that will give me installments, but will have to go for the cheapest possible one, certainly not business.

both me and hubby were bankrupt in 2007, we changed our car insurances over to a cheaper company last year and pay by direct debit, we have never had any problems with it at all. |

If work would lend you the money it might be a better option, better to be in work than not after all. |

update yesterday is that work will not allow me to be there without the correct insurance - business insurance. I cant pay a year at once. Got quote from elephant etc whom people have said they give monthly premiums. For the convenience they want 1700 a year ! that completley ridiculous and absorbes the surplus income i would have from working. Tried Halifax and they cant quote me due to 0 no claims. Jane.l which insurance company are you with now |

Paul , my family are unfortunatley not as lovely as I , hence i do not have an awful lot to do with them. I would not ask them for anything even if i were desperate as would not give them the satisfaction of saying no to me ( know this from experience). :)
Im going to do quite a bit of "number crunching" over the weekend and weigh up the pro's and con's of every avenue and see where that leads me.
Speak before Monday morning if you have a couple mins.
