Hi, my partner and I went Br in March 10. My partner is self employed and his tax rebate is clearing in our account at the moment. His work car has just stopped working, and he really needs a newer car, will the OR let him buy one out of his tax rebate or will someone else have to buy us a car? This happened a few months ago, and as they bought him a cheap car and it is now ruined, I dont think it is likely that they will buy another! Not that I blame them to be honest. Should we let the OR know about the rebate first or just buy the car and then explain? They took my old car and got £117 for it. But my partner has no other way to get to work. He works all over the place and spends hours driving to places of work. So he needs something reliable. I have seen on some of these sites that they allow £2000 for a car?
Thanks for your time.
Rav.

You need to tell the OR about the rebate straight away

I was allowed £2000 on my car because I was self employed. The only difference is I already had my car which was valued at £2750, so I had to pay the OR £750 to keep it.

Your case is slightly different in that you need a new car, and have an extra £2000 in your account which the OR would be interested in.

If you had not have already gone bankrupt and bought the car prior to your bankrupcty, then you would have probably been OK. But you now want to use £2000 spare cash to buy a car which is different.

I would talk with the OR and see where you stand with this. You never know he might be understanding. Don't just go out and spend the £2000 on a car without saying anything otherwise you will get yourself into trouble.
