Hi, after discharge from bankruptcy,my credit file still shows all my defaults & CCJ's. Is there a way for me to 'clean up'these entries & get them marked as satisfied? many thanks

Brian,
try this link to money saving expert, which I think explains how to clear your file up:

Morning Brianth.

If the creditors who were included in your bankruptcy had defaults registered against you or CCJ's, then these accounts should be showing as satisfied or settled. It may be worth telephonning these creditors to enquire as to the reason that they have not contacted the credit agencies to update the information. Another thing that you may like to consider is purchasing a copy of your bankruptcy discharge from the court and sending copies to your creditors requesting that they mark the accounts as satisfied. However a certificate of discharge will cost you £60.

All the best

To be honest I wouldn't bother too much at the moment. The BR will show up on your credit rating for six years from the date of the order.

All defaults will drop off after six years anyway.

Buckle your seat belt Dorothy, 'cos Kansas is going bye bye.

Follow the link that Bigal has posted. It not only shows you the process for cleaning up your credit file but also the reasons for doing it

quote:

Why Should I Bother?

This is one that is asked periodically, well…..

Once the accounts are marked as satisfied and the account is correctly closed with the creditor / debt buyer.

They can’t sell it on to another debt buyer, so you won’t get hassled in the future, with DCA that won’t believe you have been bankrupt – There have been instances of this happening 4 – 5 years after bankruptcy where the files have not been cleaned

Your CRFs will automatically clean after 6 years from default/settlement date, so you will have a squeaky clean file from then. – There have been MANY instances where former creditors only close the account off several years after your discharge, thus knackering your CRF’s for many many years. In effect creating a very bad CRF for a lot longer than 6 years and in the worst case I have heard off a full 11 years!!!!!

Your accounts will be marked as settled in the meantime, which ADDS to your credit score

You will be able to rebuild your life much quicker

Peace of Mind!!!!

It's a slow process as creditors won't be in any hurry to update your files but it's probably worth doing as you only need to send a few letters off to creditors and it doesn't cost much to view your credit file.

As Kallis mentions the debts will drop off your credit file in 6 yrs form the BR date so it's not vital to clean-up the file but I, for one, am keeping a very, very close eye on my finances after declaring BR so cleaning up my credit file is something that I think is worthwhile.

And be warned that accounts that are marked as satisfied can be changed back, so it's worth keeping an eye on your credit file.

Barclaycard marked my account as partially satisfied and next time I checked it was showing as defaulted again so I had to go through the process again.

I've no idea what it shows now as I must admit I've lost interest - I will finish sorting it out one day!

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 - it's over at last!

if you follow the advice on MSE get a copy of your certificate of discharge and send it to the creditors they then have a certain length of time to correct it or you can report them.
it is worth doing as few will correct the CRA files without being prompted.
