Well after one year of being in an IVA and now going bankrupt I finally told my parents last night!!! They were fantastic, I cried, they cried with me. I had lots of hugs and support and even though they said they wish I had told them years ago when things started going wrong they understood my reasons for not saying anything. Turns out that even my Uncle went bankrupt a few years ago.
AND.... just as I started telling them, my dad put his hand on my arm and said before you go any further, I already know! Being bored one day he decided to type all our names into google and because my surname is unusual my name came straight up and led him to the insolvency register! He has known for months... said he didn't want to say anything because he knew I would tell him when I was ready!
So for weeks now I haven't been sleeping, thoughts going round in my head about what I was going to say and how, I got to bed last night, puffy eyed and an extremely bad headache which I have still got but by god did I sleep well!!!
So for everyone who is fearful about telling family, just do it. You need the support, they are your family who love you unconditionally!

I so pleased for you, that must me a real weight off your shoulders?
A problem shared is a problem halved and all that!! Well done for taking the courage in talking to your parents about it. I have seen this happen before and the results are not always the same, as some end up with lots of arguments as well as tears but the end result is usually the same and that's the family bonding together, as indeed they should do.

That's great news Maizie, I'm so pleased for you. I was dreading telling my mum when I went BR, but she was great and it was such a weight off my shoulders x

i told my mum a while back and without her help and support i doubt i'd be here today,i expect i would be in a funny farm or on a slab in a morgue.she gave us the BR fees,lent us the rent and deposit on our new house and has been a pillar of strength even though she 300 miles away.its as much as i can do to stop her coming to help unpack

Most people fear the "stigma" of BR, but as you've found out, the people who care for you are normally far happier that your debt situation has been resolved!

Just reading the thread here and I too felt really bad and guilty when I had to confess to how bad the mess was that we were in.
My parents have been fantastic, my dad keeps trying to come up with solutions, and finally on their wedding anniversary after my hubby left me then I had to tell them. I felt so relieved and yet so guilty that I palmed this information onto them. Hubby came back and we are starting to get back on track.
We are going to fight for our house now, and if the time comes when we cant get the remortgage and the payments are too much then we will cross that bridge when we come to it, other than that things are on track for the BK hearing on the 4th of August.
Im glad that you found the courage to go for it and its great that although not everyone is supportive to start with they are in the end.
Good luck with the BK when are you going to go for it, or have you done it already.
