I had my home repossessed in august due to an unpaid secured loan in mine and my ex partners name going into default after we split up. He then stopped paying the mortgage which was the only thing id asked him to pay, (rather than set maintenance) I fell behind with everything leading up to and since the split. I managed to get a place for me and my 2 young children (1 of which is deaf) with my mum having to go on the tenancy as my credit was so bad. Im now being made br due to falling behind with council tax payments in the old place and just dont know what comes next or anything. I have an abbey current and savings accounts, i dont know if these will be allowed to stay open, and the prospect of having to change details for my benefits to be paid in, is rather daunting! I enjoyed working, but again, since the split and my ex being the person he is and his family causing non stop trouble, I had to give that up too and now rely on benefits, which if im correct means that i should be able to continue getting? Everything is so confusing. What do i do?

Hi glauren and welcome to the forum!

We all know how you feel-it's all very worrying at the time, but you will be ok. I went BR 2 weeks ago so I remember that feeling well!! We're here to answer your questions and to offer moral support!
:-)

Firstly, are you certain the council are going to go ahead with your BR and that it's the only or best option for you? It's important you've looked at all avenues and have taken some good professional advice when facing this. If you haven't, maybe get an appt with the CAB, or another debt charity, or ring the helpline on here, to get FREE advice on your situation.

Presuming BR is the road you have to go down, with regards to your bank accounts, it's likely they will be frozen when you go BR. You can open another one, though, a basic account which is suitable for BRs, such as the co-op cashminder. You can open it over the phone and you can do DD's and SO's and it has a VISA electron card with it. I opened mine prior to BR and am really happy with it.

You will still be able to get your benefits as normal once you are BR and if benefits are your sole source of income, you will not be asked to make any payments back to your creditors via the OR.

I hope that helps a little, hon. Please remember we understand and are here to help all we can.

Take care and keep posting!
