Questions, questions. Sorry but another one. If I declare myself bankrupt, do you think the OR would let me keep my car. It's a Ford KA, 1996 and I doubt it is worth more than £1000, and thats pushing my luck. I don't need it for work but I do use it to visit my elderly mum, who is recovering from a stroke and the death of my father 5 months ago, so I try and visit her most weekends. The car is ultimately cheaper to run than paying trains fares, believe it or not. Do you think I would be able to keep the car in this case?
  Thanks very much

                       Hi
it's a difficult one. You say you don't need the car for work, is that because you are not in work at the moment?
Are there any children at home that need a lift to school?
Do you need a car as you are looking for work?
Different offices will view your car in different ways. There is little consistency so it's largely the luck of the draw. Of course you should emphasise the need to help Mum but there's no guarantee you will be allowed to keep it based on that reason only.
They will, at the least, offer you the chance to "buy" the car back or for a 3rd party to buy it on your behalf.

                       Hello John,
Many thanks for your reply. I am currently in employment, but I use the train to get to work. The car is used mainly for visiting my mum and getting out and about really. As I said, the car itself is of negligable value really and I would be suprised if the OR considered it as an asset. The rail fares to visit my mum would be more expensive than the costs of keeping the car itself to be honest. As you say though, it would be up to the OR as to whether I would be allowed to keep it I guess.
  Thanks anyway
