| hi i have just watched a programme called beat the bailiffs first shown 2005.the bailiffs come into your house and take possessions.my question is that the man owed about 100000 and they took everything.tv beds beer out the fridge even the cat that had value being a special type.they left him with nothing .i thought you are allowed to keep certain things.was this programme wrong or is it actually like that thanks |

I think they can do that,
But if they had gone down the BR route, then it gives you some form of protection,
Only high value assets will be realised.

I've heard bad things about this programme before. The link Skippy has given you is a good one and at least you know what your rights are.

Hello
I saw this too there were 8 episodes in total and I was shocked that the Bailiffs took the Cat and said they would sell him as an asset as he was a Burmese/Siamese type of Cat and had value.
The owner was heartbroken about that. I did not realise they took people's pets as part of an asset for the creditors but they did take him.
Shocking!

They took the cat?!?!?!?!
According to the link that Skippy posted they are able to:
"What can a bailiff take?
Bailiffs can't take essentials such as clothing, bedding, cookers, fridges, most furniture and the 'tools of your trade' (for example, a computer you use for work).
They can take non-essential items such as your television. They can take possessions outside your home (for example, your car or garden equipment), or in unlocked sheds and garages."
I imagine they try and take everything that they can as people aren't aware of what powers they do and don't have and just think they are able to do what they want.
The link also mentions that unless they are recording for HMRC or recovering unpaid magistrates' court fines they cannot force their way into your home and you do not have to let them in. I didn't see the program but it sounds like it was a case of the person not knowing their rights and the bailiffs just doing what they want.

God help anyone who tried to take Harry (my cat)! I'd be arrested before they could get anywhere near him!

| Good for you Skippy13 and Harry too! I always smile when I see Harry ... who is frugal friendly.... no bailiffs should be allowed to seize cherished pets! This I suppose was meant to be a lesson for others but it was more an act of cruelty. |

Unfortunately, if your pet is a valuable one, I believe they can take them.

| I had thought that was illegal removing pets to be sold off to the highest bidder but it seems the bailiffs can take them ... what about the distress to the pet in question! |
