Hi there,
I do hope you can give some advice. . .my wife and I lived in England for a year and a half and managed to get £4000-$5000 in debt. The cost of England became overwhelming and we didn't know what to do about it, so we scraped together our final pennies and returned to our home of Canada. We now have letters coming from the bank telling us that we have to pay X amount or they will basically come after us.

We can't afford to pay this debt. . . we really can't.

So far nothing has shown up on our Canadian Credit raiting which shows any signs of these debts. I'm not sure if it will show up in Canada and I'm not sure what the British bank can do to us. .

Any help?

Thank you

Hi mru
and welcome
I don't think they can touch you in Canada,
It would only affect you if you returned to live in the UK,
Did you inform them of your address in Canada, if they don't contact you for 6 years it will be statute bard.

All the best

Well, it's not statute bard as we've only been out of England since October of 2008. . .They do also have our Canadian address (we had every intention of paying the money back so we did give them a forwarding address). We were making payments for a few months but then our situation changed dramatically and the exchange rate was murder. . .I really don't see how we would pay this back right now. . or any time soon.

I'm just worried that they will try to legally take action, I'm not sure what my options are. I've thought of just filing Bankruptcy in the UK but as I understand it, that's not a possibility as I am not British and I don't live there.

So, here I am, stuck with 4-5k debt and no way to pay it back and a letter telling me my account is in Arrears.

Does anybody know for sure if they can or can not come after us in Canada?
