I am permanently disabled with Multiple sclerosis, and have been struggling to pay 2 debts totalling less than 20,000. Lloyds TSB are now hassling me. I am on only income support and DLA and they are insisting I pay them far more than I can afford. I live in a little council adapted bungalow. Would declaring myself bancrupt help?

If you declared BR the debts would be written off. If they are less than £15k then a Debt Relief Order (DRO) would be a better option as it only costs £90 rather than the £510 for BR.

There is information regarding a DRO at http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/pdfs/guidanceleafletspdf/droguide.pdf

Before deciding to do anything you should seek some professional advice. You can do this from either the CAB, CCCS or the National Debtline. The following companies also post on this board and are highly respected. They offer free advice and will only charge if you want their assistance in completing the BR forms or even accompanying you to court on the day:

Jones Giles - http://www.jonesgiles.co.uk/
Reviva UK: http://www.revivauk.com/

Even though you are being hassled by your creditors you should take your time and make sure you make the best decision on how to resolve your financial problems.
