Well I cant find a job and am thinking of training in my hobby as a gym personal trainer, it takes 8 weeks to do then thats it, I would be qualified annd self employed, however whats it like to be self employed and is it a worthwhile venture.

It's a worthwhile venture if you are prepared for the hard work of making a business work and are willing to stick at it.
Being self employed is hard work and can be worrying if you have a quiet time. My OH is self employed and it took quite a long time for him to get established. There's always the worry that you won't make enough money to pay the bills, and if you're sick or have holiday you won't get paid. It works ok for us as I have a reasonably well paid job (or it was until I had a pay cut!) so we know that we have one regular wage coming in.
Also, don't forget you will have to do your own tax returns, keep records for 7 years etc - it's not difficult but it's something my OH moans about!
I'm not trying to put you off, just telling you how I see it. On the positive sign, my OH is much happier than when he worked for a company.
Think very carefully if it's what you want to do, especially if it's going to cost money to start out.
Good luck.

Hi Stu
is there any reason that you couldn't start part time at evenings and weekend to see how it goes and the likely income .

Hi Paul
You need the qualifications before you can start and its an 8 week course, I was thinking of still looking for a part time job too maybe in the gym industry but not nursing just till i get established.
My benefits run out in 8 - 10 weeks because I havent paid enough NI so I think now is a good time to go for it, ive applied for loads of jobs and nothing at least this way I will qualify myself in a new area and can start a business self employed

Thank you Paul I will do. I spoke to a trainer at the gym i goto at the moment and he said that they recruit trainers, dont charge the ground rent for 3 months and refer an equal share of new clients to them to induct and then try and get a steady income from, he advised to do another course ontop of this one but I Will wait I think for that one.
Several gyms send their new trainers on management courses too and help towards registration fees
