Hi there!

I have been trying to open up an account with NatWest but they need to see my certificate of discharge. I think I had one but when I moved all the bankruptcy paperwork disappeared so I've lost it. I am now going to apply for a duplicate at the cost of £60 but the man at the court said I need to apply in writing. Can anyone tell me the best way to write the letter or have any templates? I don't want to get it wrong and have to go down there again.

Many thanks for that reply, it's a big help. I just wanted to open another basic bank account in my hometown (not 60 odd miles away like my current one) so i could put money away each month to save up for a car and house but they all want to see certificate of discharge which is frustrating as it was 06 I was discharged. I can't even open up a savings account which i find stupid.

Hi, just to let you know - I got the Certificate of Discharge, and i thought it was going to be this great thing with an embossed stamp on it etc, but no it was just a piece of A4 paper - in fact im sure it was a photocopy - and i had requested two copies as well at a charge of £1 for each photocopy and £60 for the actual Certificate (two years ago). Basically they were all the same piece of paper just photocopied....so I cant see this being much different to the notice that you print out off of the Insolvency Register...Mine was at Oxford - so your Court might be different.
I just wrote a letter, inclosed the cheque, and said my name, address, that i wanted the Certificate of Discharge, and that i went bankrupt in Nov 07. They will have your details listed there. Thanks

Hi! I already done that and NatWest don't accept it so certificate it is. It's handy to have for when I sort out my finances. Thanks for the info!

Hi Vicky

Why dont you ring your OR and explain the situation even though you are discharged they may help.

I had the same problem last month (Been discharged since July 2009) as I wanted to open a coop savings account and they wanted a discharge certificate from Bankruptcy I rang the OR in Liverpool and he sent me a letter basically stating that I went BR In Jan 09 Discharged in July 09 and that I am discharged the coop accepted that as proof.

Thanks for the reply. I know my reference and discharge date but I can't remember the date I went BR. It was Oct 2005. I'll just write a letter with all the details I know and hope for the best! :)

Hi VikiVK

you do not say the date that you were discharged but if it was within the last three months you can download a print out from the insolvency website, most banks and creditors will accept that version.

hope it saves you £60

I would imagine that as long as you provide the full details of your BR (date, reference etc) that's all you'd need. If you're unsure you can always give the court a call to double check.
