Hi there,
I have been discharged from bankruptcy since December 2009. One of my creditors still haven't amended my credit report & is still showing an outstanding balance of just over £11k. This is preventing me from trying to obtain credit in order for me to start repairing my credit score. I have sent them my discharge notice twice & after complaining to the financial ombudsman they contacted me asking me to send it again. I did this on 13th July & am now waiting the obligatory 3 weeks for a reply.
Can you please tell me what happens if they refuse to take this outstanding balance off my credit report? The whole point of declaring myself bankrupt was so that my debts would be wiped because I was unable to pay them due to being made redundant & my ex-husband (who took out the loan on our behalf) is now dead so they are unable to go to him for payment.
I'm really at a loss as to what to do. This is ruining my life & I'm getting very stressed with it all.
Appreciate any advice you can offer.
Thank you
H

I might be wrong but any defaults like this one will stay on your credit file for 6 years, so even though you are discharged from your BR it won't be easy/possible to get credit for a long time.

Thanks for your reply.
I'm aware that the "default" stays on my report for 6 years. It's the outstanding amount that can be amended to settled of satisfied. My other creditor has changed it so why won't this one????

I've been advised that Vanquis offer credit cards to people with bad credit ratings but they declined me!!

All I want to do is start rebuilding my credit score as I was told I could do that from Citizens Advice Centre before I went bankrupt.

Can anyone help with this?

I would wait before applying for credit anyway. Until 6 years is up you will find it difficult to get any major credit.

Hi, I too am trying to improve my credit rating. I was discharged in Nov 2008 - I applied for Vanquis Card the other day and got turned down, I am going to write to them to ask why, as others on here have been successful and have only just become discharged. Are you on the electoral role - as this has an impact. Also, there are three credit report companies - so i think you have to inform all three of them about your discharged status. They will change or should change your status to part - satisfied or satisfied. It is really frustrating.

You need to write to all creditors asking them to amend your credit score to settled or partially settled. If they won't do this you can then inform the Information Commissioner who has the power to force them to comply.

There are details in my blog, and I know Debtinfo has posted a link before.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 - it's over at last!

Thanks for all your replies.
369 - when I wrote to Vanquis Bank to ask them why they had turned me down all they did was check my credit report AGAIN & then write to tell me that they had declined me. I daren't write to the muppets again in case they check it for a third time & ruin my credit score even more. Obviousley they didn't actually read my letter so be careful in case they do the same to you.

I've written to both my creditors (it seems that only 2 have defaulted me, which I find weird but I'm not gonna complain!) & so far 1 of them has changed their status to "satisfied" but I appreciate that the default will stay on my credit file for a further 5 years.

If Sainsburys refuse point blank to amend their status then I will report them to the financial ombudsman & the information commissioner.

I just feel as though I'm being ignored & its incredibly frustrating. I'm guessing I can't even apply for a mobile phone or sky contract in my name if this stays on my credit report?????

Has anyone been refused one of these?
