can l get help with baliffs! l am on income support and this was a council tax debt from 2003 to 2004. we was on benifits at the time but what happen was that when we moved we had to go onto child tax credits and we was miss informed that, that was just for the children as it used to be income support for all kids and adults. but when child tax credits come into affect we thought we got our money aswell as kids money and housing benifit still. but then on feb 04 our 3 yr old died. so this kinda got forgotton as you could imagine it was a very hard time for us.
but then in 2006 l started getting letters about this bill, for just under 1000 pounds. and its got much worse coz they came to my door in around may r june and said if l dont give them no money they will take my stuff and that theres a van waiting down the road. well l rang my mum up in tears and she give them 200 pounds and they said l can pay 50pound each mth. but in july they assled me again saying l haven`t paid and now have broken the agreement. l asked how and they said l have paid nothing. l then found that my 200 as now gone missing and my mum said they wrote on a ripped peace of paper, and scribbled his name. but mymum now cant find this and they have really got horrible towards me now, they are txtin me nearly every day and ringing my home shone and letters all the time. l suffer from a lot of illnesses and depression. and this is making my worse. and they said they want all the money now l haven`t got it as lm on income support. so can you please please help me.. thank you

Im not a forum expert however I couldn't help but offer some advice of my own.

Some of these bailiffs are a law amongst themselves, and despite clampdowns there are some rogues about. The first thing you need to do really is speak to the Citizen's Advice Bureau - you'll get good advice here and on many other forums however the local input and someone to speak to in a hurry should things get worse will be of utmost importance to you. They will also be able to advise you on how to handle these bailiffs, and help you get letters sent to them and the people you originally owe money to.

Too many of these companies think the world should stop for them, and when difficulty arises through personal tragedy, illness or anything else important, they rarely think it's an excuse; they're interested in their money and nothing else.

Keep your head held high, despite what's happened you're clearly a bigger person than they are, it's time to start getting in control of them, rather than the situation and bailiffs controlling you. Proper legal advice is only the first step, just make sure you keep as much evidence as possible (i.e. that little slip of paper if you've got it) and refuse to speak to anyone over the phone about it - if they want to communicate with you, they do it in writing or nothing at all. State this is because you 1. need a legal record of it and 2. they have exasperated the problem and your nerves mean you can barely speak. That might be a slight bending of the truth but it means legally they have no choice but to accept and communicate in writing only.

Sorry it's gotten this far, but please don't believe you're lower than these people or that you've nowhere to come for help. Although some of the experts on here will be very pleased to offer some more expert opinions and help than my own, you'll always find a kind word to settle a nerve should you need to here.

Chin up, you're better than them.

Hi Tina and Welcome

My you have had a real bad time of late and i am sorry to hear that your being hassled by bailiffs.

Do you know if the debt went to court at all. Also
this may sound a little strange but i would so love you to get some one to one advice from our guys at the helpline.

I know they cant always speak straight away but leave a name and a contact number and they will get back to you. That contact number is 0800 078 9367.

I would as suggested get things now in writing and make sure that they do this, as Syn & Mac have said your better than them and if you think about it these guys that hassle you are self employed and need there money as otherwise they wont get paid and so have to hassle you to get it. They have no morals or even a heart so i dont know how they sleep at night.

I would give the helpline a call.

Best of luck

Jo

Hi Tina 3

sorry took so long to get back to you.

I would contact the council concerned and inform them, in the nicest possible way, that the bailiff's they have appointed are employing bully boy tactics and probably guilty of contravening section 40 of the Administration of Justice Act 1970 which is a criminal offence.

Unless the council call them off you will have no hesitation in going to the press with your story stating how the council employ unscrupulous collectors. Then try to come to some payment arrangement with the council. You will after all have to make some commitment towards the debt.

You do not have to be at your property just because they happen to be there and you should never let them in. Keep all doors and windows firmly closed and contact the council asap.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

PS Don't forget to inform the council that you have proof of the bailiff's tactics by way of the texts you have received.

PPS the £200 previously paid has probably not been taken from the debt as the bailiff's charge that kind of some just to turn up.
