Wierd but you need to take out credit to improve your ability to prove that you can repay debt.
So a mobile phone contract is good because they log your payments with the credit reference agencies.
catalogue purchases do the same
you may be offered a credit card with a HUGE interest rate and a low limit ( probably capital 1 with £200 limit at 40% apr) . Provided that you really manage this VERY CAREFULLY and pay it all of each month so there are not surprises your credit score will improve.
Also check that you are registered for poll tax and have a bank account.
these are all key factors.

Also a lot of bank accounts report to the credit agencies - I've got the Co-op Cashminder and a Nationwide basic Flexaccount and they both show on my files.
