Hello - I was cohabiting in the UK and moved to Canada to try and find work with my new wife..however nothing has emerged and I cant keep up payments in UK - I dont have any property left in the UK and we are only renting here. I owe the IR about 20k and they are nagging. Can I make my self bankrupt in UK remotely?

You would have to appoint a Power of Attorney to make yourself bankrupt from Canada, you can use a friend or family member and you don't have to appear at court.

The glimmer gets brighter all the time

Hi

if the IR is your only UK debt and you have yet to find work, I'm assuming you have been funding UK repayments to date from capital you took with you when you left the UK, you may be shocked to find what little capital sum may be accepted by the IR in full settlement.

My company have recently settled a £500K tax debt for £15K. This works on the basis that the IR are not, as other creditors, a profit making enterprise that can offset monies lost in bankruptcy against other profits.

If you can write and demonstrate your position it would not surprise me if a £1K offer, or thereabouts, in full settlement would mean you could avoid bankruptcy.
