I am currently out of work and claiming incapacity benefit for a nervous disorder which means I am unlikely to be able to work for the forseable future. I have mounting debts and it would make sense to declare myself bankrupt. I have an offer of a place at University for later this year - would the bankruptcy stop me going to university?

Hi N S,
It would not affect you going to university, but it would affect if you are going to require finance for your degree which is something to consider.
Also what are you looking to study, Bankruptcy may not affect the study of your degree, but there are certain careers that will be affected so you would have to look at this also.

As far as I am aware, you should still be able to claim the student grant and the student maintenance living loan. If you cantact the Uni where you have been offered a place and ask them for details of the finace package available for students and check out the info on the relevant website. if you live in wales i know if www.studentfinancewales.co.uk
Also, if you carefully explain about your reason for studying to the incap benefit you may still be allowed to continue with the benefit while you study. Skill do a leaflet all about Studying whilst also incapable for work, I would suggest you read this. if you cant find it, feel free to post your email address and i will send it to you.
Finally, there are support packages for people with disabilites/conditions available directly from the Student Services Depts of Uni's. This means filling in a form, getting proof of illness from GP, basic assesment at Uni, and then they decide on a package for you. In some case they will kit you out with a PC and desk to work from home, and possibly pay towards your travel costs if you have to pay more due to your illness, and you can also get an adult helper.
Dont be put off going to Uni, the support available is fantastic, you can even have counselling onsite, but furthermore, the opportunites available to you post graduation will be worth it!

| Sorry, forgot to say, being BR you would'nt be able to get student overdraft with the banks, but otherwise should be able to get the Student finance. |

me and my partner went bankrupt on 02.05.07 (discharged today!!!) he started uni in Sep07- obviously can't get student bank acounts bt you can get student loan and grants
