We're about to move out of our mortgaged property next week and just wanted advice on what we should do re informing Northern Rock. Do we just send the keys back recorded delivery with an explanitory letter? Also are we still responsible for council tax at this property aswell as our new rental until NR confirm receipt of the keys?

Hi panicked mum. I was with Northern Rock. I sent the keys back but they said they did not need them as they would change the locks anyway. They will send you a letter to sign which you must not sign. See previous posts on this subject. Put in Deed of Acknowledgement and you should find threads. I signed mine but cross out the paragraph that said about being liable etc. I did include the estimated shortfall in the SOA. Just found out that my house has been sold subject to contract so at least Northern Rock will know the shortfall and it will be all sorted through my BR. I rang my Council Tax and told them the situation. They put a note on my file but then wrote to me to ask me to confirm the situation with the house. I sent them my tenancy agreement, my ccourt letter and the letter from NR saying they had re-possessed. Good luck.
