I work as an IT contractor, which has meant needing SC clearance for certain contracts in the MOD & elsewhere.

I have recently been declared bankrupt (unrelated to my work in IT) and my SC clearance has now lapsed. Do you know whether I would be likely to get it again?

Hi,

It will depend on whether there is a credit check or not. Have a look at http://www.securityclearedjobs.com/how_to_become_security_cleared.asp as this explains the differing levels of clearance and the checks involved.

SC Clearance mentions a credit check so this could be a problem:

Security Check (SC) is for people who have substantial access to SECRET, or occasional access to TOP SECRET assets and information. This level of clearance involves a Basic Check plus UK criminal and security checks and a credit check. To gain (SC) clearance you will normally have had to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.

I know that the credit check is part of the SC process but I heard that if I am honest about my bankruptcy on the application that there may be a chance of getting through. I certainly know that a former colleague of mine was cleared despite having a Russian mother and having a conviction for drunk & disorderly when he was a teenager...

I was wondering whether anyone had heard of a bankrupt getting through or if there maybe a way of asking the MOD this question?

To my mind this check is about susceptability to bribery and now having been made bankrupt I would have thought the risk would be less...
