Hi all

I really need some advise please!

I applied for a Coop current account couple of weeks ago online and waited for the email to verify they had received my application.Approx 6 days later I still hadn't heard anything so I rang them and was told I had been declined. The Coop guy on the phone said that I could however have a cashminder account and went through a few more questions and said that this had been accepted. I got letter in the post stating that I just needed to get couple of ID's certified and return to Coop asap.So I spent the next days rushing around trying to get this organised, but then I came home to another letter from the Coop yesterday saying that I had been declined the account.
I was a bit bewildered as to perhaps the letter was just referring to the other current account I applied for so I rang them and they said I had not been accepted for any account and they couldnt tell me the reason, but have given me an address to write an appeal to....??

I am completely lost here!?? I have been running my basic RBS account for well over 5 years with a debit card and cheque book and havent had any problems. One of my creditors is connected to RBS so this is why I needed a cashminder account before BR.

I really do not know what to do now????????????

Are you on the voters list at your address? Usually this is one reason why they decline a Cashminder.

Otherwise, you could write and appeal.

Try Barclays in the meantime as they are usually quite good at doing basic accounts for BR. I would do it in branch though and take ID with you.

The glimmer gets brighter all the time

I'm not on the electoral register and have a Cashminder account but I did need to provide additional ID.

Were the Co-op one of your creditors when you declared BR?

Hi all and thanks for all help.

I am not on the electoral list and Coop isnt one of my creditors.
I remember that few years ago I did try and get my name on the voters list but got a letter back stating I wasnt accepted as I am not British..?? I have kept the letter somewhere as proof that I at least tried.

Barclays are one of my creditors and altough I also have a basic current account with a cash card- not debit card- I feel I shouldnt use this as I believe they COULD take money out of the account towards the Barclay debt.....

I could write an appeal to COOP stating that I need the cashminder account and perhaps they need to see my bank statments etc.....but am I just wasting my time???? Who is that person that looks at this appeal and what authority do they have anyways...??

No idea who looks at it.

You could try the Coventry Building Society, but the drawback with that is that there aren't many local branches, but I believe that you can use the Co-op to pay money in and you can send cheques through the post.

There are banks such as ThinkBanking and Secure Trust which offer accounts with cards but they do incur a monthly fee.

The glimmer gets brighter all the time

Heloo again all

Still got this problem of not getting a bank acount....

So I have looked at THINK Banking and would be happy to have their account/services and it looks easy to apply and as far as its sais on their website I should be able to get an account.
HOWEVER, I then read further on that Thinkbanking is Connected to RBS and as I have said previously part of my debt is with RBS/Mint so I am now really depressed thinking I cant even get Thinkbanking account....???

Any advise from the experts please!?

You should be fine with Think banking even if RBS are one of your creditors. Think charge for their services so will take anyone who is prepared to pay the fee.

There is no harm in trying to open an account as you don't know that they will say 'no' unless you try.
