Is it OK to claim for partial rent to my mother considering the house is her's and fully paid for.I heard that I might be done for beneficial interest in the house if I pay rent or any maintenance.I have one son at uni and one at school.Neither of them have any money to help with expenses.My son;s grant/loan will not last for over the summer hols.

Yes it is ok as long as it is a reasonable amount, just tell them the truth, you didnt pay rent before because you couldnt afford to, now you only think it would be fair. I should point out that if you claim for it you actually do need to be paying your mother rent
