| How safe are these 'guaranteed' online bank accounts? I am beginning to realise there is little or no alternative for an undischarged bankrupt. Should I go ahead and apply? |

Hi and welcome.
Which accounts are you looking at? Ones such as Clearcash, Secure Trust and Thinkbanking are fine. You are guaranteed acceptance although they do carry a monthly fee. |

Thank you. I've just had my account with a high street bank closed without warning, after they told me in branch that they were happy to have me. I think all the banks are doing the same, opening an account for you but then it is closed down by their head office. I'm wondering if the online accounts will do this too.

I think you'll be safe with the online paid accounts as they are geared to 'people like us' who the high street banks don't want to know.
If you pop over to the sister IVA forum there has been a few discussions recently about these accounts.

I'm guessing that it was either HSBC or First Direct Freya?
They are well known for closing accounts. |

I think more and more banks are doing it now Niobe. Sadly they don't want to know if you have money problems now.

| Must admit I've not heard of any others who close the accounts once they are open. Hope Nationwide don't close mine! |

I thought I remembered one of the banks closing the account of someone in an IVA recently but I could be wrong, and Lloyds are planning on starting doing it as well.
The BR drops of my credit file in 6 weeks time so I hope Nationwide don't do anything now!!!

Thankfully we still have a full Barclays account as they were not one of hubby's creditors so if Nationwide do their worst we do still have one!
I think it's disgusting that if you are conducting your bank account correctly you should be punished for getting your affairs in order.

Thank you everyone. We are all in a pickle aren't we. It is true the banks don't want to know about the epidemic of bankrupts even though they are responsible for the problem by allowing people to rack up debt that they were never going to be able to repay. The banks didn't care at the time did they? They, the banks, have brought this mess on themselves. It was Lloyds who closed my account, after telling me they were happy to keep me on. The branch staff don't seem to know anything about bankruptcy or the policies of their own employer regarding bankrupt clients. There is still so much stigma and taboo regarding bankruptcy but something has to be done because we are on the increase. For the most part we are not criminals, we are victims of the casino banking of the credit boom era. As we all know, casinos are the root of all evil.

That's unusual for Lloyds. Of course we're not criminals even though it does appear that we are treated like one!
For a lot of people it is sometimes circumstances beyond their control such as a job loss, illness that forces us down the insolvency route and I wish banks would realise that we are more likely to keep our affairs in order than someone who has their head buried in the sand.
Let us know which account you go for and how you find it. |

I'm sure I remember seeing something about Lloyds on the IVA forum - they are changing their policy regarding people in an IVA so no doubt this applies to people who are BR as well.
